Zenith SA, based in Le Locle, Switzerland, was founded by Georges Favre-Jacot in 1865. Favre-Jacot was the first person to unite all watchmaking professions in one place, which revolutionised watch production at the time. The company was originally known as The Manufacture.

In 1899, The Manufacture produced its first pocket chronograph and in the first year of the new century, Favre-Jacot was awarded the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. The name Zenith was adopted by the company in 1911.

In 1948, Zenith launched its Calibre 135, the wristwatch chronometer that went on to win a total of 235 prizes across the world. El Primero was the first automatic chronograph movement and it is still produced today, almost fifty years after its birth. Indeed, it is still recognised as the most precise series-made calibre in the world.

In 1975, Zenith took the decision to only produce quartz watches, so to save plans, tools and the parts required for the production of the El Primero from being destroyed, watchmaker Charles Vermot hid them. When the demand for mechanical watches grew once more in 1984, Zenith were able to begin production of the El Primero anew – thanks to Charles Vermont.
