In 1884, Leon Breitling founded the Breitling SA company in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The company remained in the Breitling family until 1979, at which time it was acquired by Ernst Schneider. The Schneider family owned the company for the next thirty-eight years. In 2017, Theodore Schneider (Ernst’s son), sold eighty per cent of the company shares to CVC Capital Partners for more than $870 million. The Breitling company historically sourced its movements from other suppliers rather than producing them in-house. This remained the case until 2009, when the B01 was developed. This was a self-winding column wheel chronograph movement that was used in the Breitling Chronomat 01 and the Navitimer 01. Breitling specialises in diving and aviation watches with large watch faces, known for their easy readability.
