Ball

In 1891, Webb C. Ball set up the Ball Watch Company. The company’s history is intrinsically linked to American railroad history insofar as it came about as the result of a need for standardised timekeeping across the United States. With towns and cities across that country all using their own local times, it wasn’t until a head-on collision in April 1891 between two trains, which led to numerous deaths, that the need for standardised nationwide timekeeping was identified. Webb C. Ball was appointed as Chief Time Inspector and it was his job to ensure standards for all watches used by train employees. He put strict criteria for reliability and accuracy in place, which were later used by other institutions, the Swiss Official Testing Institute being one of them. As well as selling accurate timepieces to railroad employees, Ball Watches had an after-sale service that allowed railroad staff to take their watches in to be checked for accuracy every two weeks. The brand continues to be considered one of the most reliable and accurate watches available. Moreover, with the exquisite attention to detail and innovative designs, Ball Watches remain hugely popular with watch lovers across the world. Here at Mark Worthington Jewellers, we have a range of pre-owned Ball watches at great, affordable prices. Boxed and with original papers, our Ball watches are ideal as a treat for yourself or as a gift for someone special.
