A Guide to Panerai Watches

Panerai is a luxury watch brand renowned for its breathtakingly stylish design, its effortlessly enduring craftsmanship and exquisite engineering. But this is barely scratching the surface. Established in 1860 by Giovani Panerai in Florence’s first watchmaking school, the Panerai brand is built on a scintillating and illustrious history.

On the eve of the Second World War, Panerai produced the first prototypes of the “Radiomir” model for the frogman commandos of the Italian Navy. This paved the way for an exceptional legacy. Watches were designed not only for the Italian armed forces but for deck officers and the Egyptian military, with some watches water resistant up to 2500 meters, incredible solidity and a crown protecting device to prevent damage to the watch when winding.

Outstanding performance

Fusing Italian design with traditional Swiss technology, men’s Panerai watches, ladies’ Panerai watches and used Panerai watches truly combine the best of both worlds, possessing enormous crossover appeal. Be it the business realm or the arena of adventure, Panerai watches are elegant, practical, glamorous and essential. Such outstanding performance is reflected by no less than Mike Horn, the planet’s greatest living explorer and wearer of the Panerai brand.

Scaling 8,000 metre peaks without oxygen and walking across the North Pole in the utter darkness of winter, Mike needed a watch that matched his own expertise and tenacity. Panerai have been right by his side, producing a series of watches to accompany him on the most dangerous of expeditions: from a four-year circuit sailing all the world’s oceans to the circumnavigation of the Arctic circle. According to Mike, the only item that continued to work at perilously low temperatures was his Panerai watch. He was even able to calculate his position according to where the stars in the sky were situated, all thanks to a rotating bezel designed by Panerai illustrating the four cardinal points.

Panerai watches are water resistant up to 2,500 metres, and their water resistance is without question one of their outstanding virtues. They have played their part in some of the world’s most supreme diving exploits. Guillaume Nery is a Panerai owner, a four-time freediving world record holder and two time world champion.

Renowned for innovation and sustainability

Panerai prides itself on innovation, and its masterful use of carbon nanotubes on the dial of its LAB-ID Luminor 1950 model, for example, means that its watches can absorb light and minimise reflection, creating a stunningly black dial that offsets the blue hands and hour markers superbly. The ceramica used by Panerai is up to five times harder than stainless steel, while the composite, a synthetic ceramic, is extremely light and resistant, juxtaposing technical artistry with sportsman-like grace.

Another hallmark of men's Panerai watches and used Panerai watches is sustainability. Panerai signed a declaration to guarantee the monitoring of the leather used in its straps in the face of animal exploitation. It’s a win-win situation: high-performance leather is utilised with ethical and environmental concerns at the very forefront of manufacture.

Panerai watches are handmade in departments where absolute precision and expertise are mandatory. Assembling and adjusting the movements of Panerai watches is imperative, and a superlative level of skill from company watchmakers ensures the utmost accuracy of the watch.

In terms of quality control, men’s Panerai watches and ladies’ Panerai watches are subjected to more rigorous testing than regulation requirements, to ensure that standards are even higher. Be it potential shocks, wear, extreme temperatures, exposure to acids or UV radiation, all inspections are designed to guarantee the supreme reliability and longevity of every Panerai watch.
