Breitling's roots as a company are in Leon Breitling's St Imier workshop in the 1880s. There, Leon crafted some of the world's finest chronographs, and his innovation and creativity soon earned his company a fine reputation. It was Leon's son, Gaston, who, after his father's death in 1915, continued to produce innovative and groundbreaking watches.

Further generations of the family would oversee the company's development through the 20th century until the 1970s, when it was bought by entrepreneur Ernst Schneider. His family oversaw the company until 2017, when Ernst's son Theodore Schneider sold it for just over $870 million.
